I find portraits to be far easier than hands to draw because of the amount of detail and complicity in hands. I think it is very clear I have a somewhat messy style, as I use a lot of lines to create value and expression. I think some of my strengths are attention to detail, but I hope to get better at drawing people in general as it is something I really struggle with. In this class some goals I hope to achieve are improving my overall artistic skills, learning to use a new medium, and finding a style I really like.
Zine
My idea for my zine was to draw my favorite animals in order from most to least favorite. I looked up photos of each animal, sketches out a plan for each drawing, and decided to use colored pencils despite not being a fan of them. However, I wanted to practice with them as I don’t use them often and i want to be better at using them. I love the way the red panda and jaguar came out. I filled up white space as well as kept them neat and colorful. However, I feel like the fox, raccoon, and wolf could be better. In the future, I would layer more colors on them to fill in the white space, but I just got lazy.
Surrealism
For this work, I was inspired by the unrealistic and strange objects and colors initially shown in surrealism. I attempted to use realism in the eyes, which is something I'm not used to. Although I didn't take pictures of my process, I did plan simply by practicing drawing eyes realistically and then sketched out my idea and built off of it. I liked the idea of the focal point looking unfinished, and so I colored the surrounding area and left it in greyscale. Overall, I'm proud of the eyes I drew as they look really cool i my opinion and I want to do something like this again, but would fix the background in the future.
Art in Class
During class, I’ve worked on studying sculptures and capturing their form on paper. I want to understand figures and be able to make proportional bodies in future artwork. I planned by searching for good photos of sculptures that really showed movement, and with the one I chose most was in the drapery. I also attempted to shade in each spot that showed movement on the drapery and face/arms. I think this is a good example of success for me because I think I captured the movement in clothing well. However, I could improve on the harshness of the whole drawing as well as the neatness.
Swagger Portrait
For this theme I decided to incorporate my dog into a portrait of King George III. I wanted to emphasize on how I spoil and treat my dog like a King. I didn’t have a large plan for this as I mainly just wanted to have fun and I think the outcome is silly and was entertaining to make. This also incorporates into my planning of this projects, since I didn’t really have one and instead just went with what I thought would be fun to do. Overall, even though I didn’t have a well thought out plan, I like how it came out and think it’s silly and had a lot of fun making it.
Impressionism
When looking at these paintings, there’s a clear emphasis on lighting and color. I love the way the colors blend into one another and how visible the paint strokes are. I’m mainly inspired by the skies and flora in the surrounding environments. I look forward to creating a piece that shows a landscape with as much lighting and flora and fauna, while also incorporating intense colors.
Planning
Final Work
For this project I decided to replicate yet place my own spin on the photo i posted above. I first practiced using oil paint on painted cardboard. I decided that my first draft was far too smooth for an impressionistic artwork. When starting on my final piece, I used an acrylic wash to ensure the colors popped. I had first made my painting too smooth and then used a palette knife to create intense texture and create rugged edges between colors. Overall, I enjoyed making this piece as it was a break away from the generic form of painting and was messy.
Destruction
Planning
Final
I interpreted destruction through “purification” and the destruction of women’s dignity and morals when it comes to nudity. In our current society, it is typical to find women's chests (and in general their entire bodies) inherently sexual. I created a collage and used multiple pictures of nude women and angels to depict the madonna-whore complex. Im overall proud of the outcome and am interested in making collage again.
